If you can't beat 'em...

Ok, I obviously gave up on the NaBloMoPo. Sigh.

Saturday is my last day at work. I'm off to new adventures. I'll give you more details as they develop. Instead, enjoy a funny story about work yesterday.

The servers, out of boredom, turned on each other. It was all in good fun, unless you're the manager trying to keep them under control.

Snaking tables resulted in cups of water being thrown. And as we all know, the only way to really 'get back' at someone for dousing you with water is to take their camera from their purse and take a picture of your penis. Don't worry, he washed his hands.

The girls retaliated by throwing a cup of flour at penis picture guy. Which resulted in him rubbing his flour-body all over the smaller girl while tickling the piss out of her.

The girls managed to take every tip off his tables, probably because he was too distracted sending obscene texts with one of their phones to everyone in their address book. I know this, because I got one.

Somehow, the girls ended up getting into penis picture guy's vehicle and filling it with plastic forks... and hanging a pair of underwear from his antenna. Fantastic stuff really. But, I started to feel like I might have something to offer this little prank war. So, today.... it's on.

Oh, good. It's going to be one of those days.

1: Thank you for calling Comcast technical support, this is Whatever, how can I assist you today?

Me: Yes, ma'am. I'm calling from a restaurant, and our internet service is down.

1: Phone number?

Me: blah blah.

1: Oh, I can't help you in this department, I'll transfer you to business accounts.

Me: Thank you.

1: Thank you again for calling Comcast Technical support, I hope you have a great day, but first is there anything I can assist you with before I transfer you?

Me: (pause) No, ma'am. Thank you.

Hold music... four minutes twenty seconds.

2: Thank you for calling Comcast technical support, this is Whatever, how can I assist you today?

Me: Yes, sir, I'm calling from Restaurant and our internet service is down. I cannot batch yesterday's credit cards.

2: Is this a residential call?

Me: What? No.

2: Phone number associated with the account?

Me: blah blah

2: I don't have any record of your account.

Me: Really? The first lady pulled it up with the phone number.

2: Number again?

Me: blaaaah

2: Are you sure you have an account with Comcast? I don't have any record of your account?

Me: Yes, we had a service call yesterday and received a new router. I'm holding the invoice. Would you like our account number?

2: Is this a residential account?

Me: No! I'm still at Restaurant.

2: Hold please.

Hold music three minutes, twelve seconds.

Recorded voice: We cannot complete your call. Please hang up and try again later.

WHAT the hell, Comcast?!?!?

I'm highjacking RR's wireless. Hope they don't mind....

I LIVE for days like today.

Tuesdays suck. Busiest day of our week. Both managers work 18 hour days. TUESDAYS SUCK. Bottom line. Done. True story.

When the electricity goes out for two hours in the middle of your lunch rush on a Tuesday, they really suck. (In case your're wondering, birthday candles shoved in 2 ounce souffle cups full of mayo are surprising luminescent- in the kitchen! Jebus, don't take those on the floor or I will kill.)

Firing the only two experienced servers on staff 15 minutes into their shifts on a Tuesday sucks even harder.

There's probably something VERY wrong with me, but I LOVE days like this. Slow, uneventful days make me make me want to quit- days that EVERYTHING is working against us make me love my job.

This day in Ceci History: "Starbucks is Evil"

Lifted from LJ April, 30 2002

Anyway... I was kind of near the front of the store when I heard a man yelling at Starbucks, not in Starbucks, at Starbucks. (Starbucks closes an hour later than BN on weekends), so I go to sneak a peek through the gate with Josh. Sure enough, some freak in a suede vest with fringe is throwing a fit. Josh explains that he comes in about twice a year and goes insane.

"You're all evil! Starbucks is evil!" He repeats this about four times then pulls a f..king GUN out of the back of his pants. Josh and I take a step back, and the (10?) customers in SB all freeze. He puts the gun on a table and warns the employees behind the counter that if any of them call the police, he'll shoot them all.

He's paid absolutely no attention to Josh and I, so we run to the phone and call 911, then rush back to watch the show. He's holding the gun again, not really pointing it at anyone, just holding it. He moves closer into the store, and some of the customers run out of the store! The guy doesn't see this, he's concentrating on the employees, Mindy and Ryan. While he's up in Mindy's face, Ryan motions the rest of the customers to leave the store. Of course, they do... but just stand out side watching!

The Freak realizes that everyone is outside, (why didn't they leave?!?) and someone is a little too close to his bicycle. He runs outside, "EVIL! Get away from my bike!" While he's stroking and comforting his bicycle, the customers all run back inside and Ryan locks the freak outside. (Still no cops) We open the gate and let them into our store... they're all really freaked out and don't understand why we aren't. (Neither do we...) Now the freak is pissed at us for helping the "evil ones".

He puts the gun back in his pants and pulls out... a big ass flashlight! He shines it on all of us, screaming, "You helped the EVIL ONES! You can't save them from my rap!" I start cracking up... I'm not sure if he meant "wrath" or if he was going to delight us with a song. He does not appreciate the giggling.

He reaches into his pants again and he pulls out a very small flash light! Now he's got one in both hands. He acts like he's going to throw the big flashlight into the window a few times, and we all squeal and duck, but never actually throws them. All the sudden he runs to his bike and starts to ride towards Hwy 6. It's not the cops, just our loser security guard. Where the hell has he been for the last 20 minutes? Of course, he's not allowed to leave the damn parking lot, so the freak rides away.

Fifteen minutes later, the SB employees and customers have left and we've gone back to recovering the store. I spot a cop car pull into the parking lot with it's trunk up. They caught the freak and put his bike in the trunk... classic. We all go outside to meet the cops... one asks Ryan if he can identify the suspect as the same man that made the threats. "Nope... different sickf..k with a fringed vest and blue bicycle." We all laugh, even the cop, who shrugs and says, "I have to ask."

Everyone gets to tell the story to the cops, quite fun... as the cops were leaving the same one asks if he can get a Starbucks bag. "No problem, what for?" "We need something to put his belongings in." Holy hell, if I ever go to jail I want my belongings in a Starbucks bag. How official.

He takes his Starbucks bag, and starts to get back into the Copmobile... "Oh, if it makes you guys feel any better, it wasn't a real gun."

But the flashlights... the flashlights were REAL!

This day in Ceci History: "I'm not your stepping stone"

Lifted from LJ January 30, 2004

I was sitting on the floor in bargain, trying to pyramid, and talking to Ogden and I feel this foot kick my ass. I think that someone just accidentally backed into me or something. No, that's clearly not the case, because it doesn't stop. And Ogden has a look of disbelief/amusement on his face.

"Is someone stepping on me?"

Ogden nods.

"Why is someone stepping on me?"

Ogden shrugs.

I lean over my sholder and yell, "Hey, man! Don't step on me!"

He says, "Oh." and walks away.

WHAT THE HELL?!? No, seriously, what the hell kind of world do we live in when someone will step on you for like 30 damned seconds and doesn't even apologize?

Or even realize that he is stepping on someone's ass? I know he felt something under his foot and against his leg, but he never bothered to look. He had to have known whatever he was stepping/leaning on wasn't his, because he's not in his house. He's in public. Stepping on people.

"Oh."

It can't be both... or can it?

So, when I walked out of my apartment this morning it was cold, grey, and threatening to rain. The STP lyrics "So much depends on the weather" popped into my head as I vowed not to let the wrist slittingly horrible weather ruin my day. Not five minutes later, a morning radio team whose name I cannot currently recall informed me that today was scientifically proven to be the most depressing day of the year. They attribute this to nation-wide bad weather, the holiday credit card bills rolling in, and the likelihood that you've already broken many (if not all) of your New Year's Resolutions.

Well, that makes sense to me. They continue to enlighten me that it is also National Hugging Day. Wait. What? How can it be the most depressing day of the year if everyone's huggin' on each other?

A couple hours later the FOH staff starts rolling in, mopey and complaining about the weather. I share the interesting/depressing new fact I learned. I follow it with the good news that it's also National Hugging Day!

We spent the rest of the shift joking that people were too depressed to tip, use common sense, flush, etc.

I only got one hug- my delivery driver gave me a good bear hug when he left. Which was nice, but I guess also pretty depressing. Only one hug on NHD. Better than none, I suppose.

Turns out it was also Martin Luther King Day. Hmm.

Strike

I love all the specials the networks are coming up with to fill the void while the writers strike. I just saw an ad for the 25 greatest Grammy performances. Lame.

So, David Letterman is going to personally pay his writers until the strike is resolved, I find this very honorable but also wonder what it accomplishes.

Today was pretty brutal at work. Very, very slow. I sent everyone except one cook home at 1pm, and around 2pm I seriously considered sending him home and just closing FOH and BOH by myself.

The whole day felt like the last day of school.

Tired/Anxious

I wish I had more time to spend in Katy...

I'm starting to have second thoughts about my job decisions, which is hard because I like the company... but I feel like it's just not fitting in with what I want.

If I'm doing the math correctly (probably not), my lease is up in March. I'll probably get out of Dallas as the only reason I'm even here is because of this job...

Where to go... where to go....

Monday, November 5, 2007

See, I'm already out of things (I can) say.

I would like nothing more than to post a lengthy blog about all the shit that happened at work today, but that's just inappropriate. If nothing else, I'm appropriate.

Let's just say I got burned by trusting one of my employees and ended up running the line during the lunch "rush". Ticket times were longer than they should have been, but with no mistakes! Nothing was sent back and there were no complaints. I'm exhausted... the heat alone will drain ya a little bit.

Ok, enough of that.

So, there's a writer's strike in Hollywood, I think they're just all too busy with NaBloPoMo to be bothered with television. I'm predicting an increase in ratings for all the "late shows" tonight just for all the curious people expecting a trainwreck. Viewers of the Jay Leno show should see no change.

Coffee makes me happy

I'm in the office counting the deposit and I hear a few whistles growing closer and then the lead cook knocks on the open door and peeks in, my staff has learned to 'warn' me. I startle easily and scream loudly.

"Good morning!"

"Ceci, we have a problem."

"Yo, I'll solve it." Oh, I crack myself up, but just how do I explain a Vanilla Ice joke to a Mexican? "Sorry, it's a white thing. A really, really white thing. What's up?"

He points to Imelda's feet- she's wearing flip flops. Now, your first reaction may be "What the hell? Why would someone in the restaurant business wear flip flops?" Well, because we spend 86 hours a day on our feet and the commute is much better in flip flops. So now you're thinking, "Ok, but surely you'd remember your work shoes." You'd think so. I'm not going to lie, I have forgotten my shoes before, which is why I keep extra pairs in Otis.

I kick off my tennis shoes and socks and poor size five Imelda's feet nearly step right out of them with their first step. We stuff them with toilet paper and I run out to Otis to retrieve my back up shoes. My three inch heel back up shoes.

Nothings better for cred or tips than running a busy lunch in three inch heels. Word to your mother.

Didn't she say, "No, no, no"?

So, Amy Winehouse is in rehab? This makes me happy, only because I really enjoy bad media puns. I can't wait. Please feel free to share any good ones you hear/read.

For the record, this is what I know about Amy Winehouse. I like her voice. That song is catchy, but I haven't heard it enough to know any more than the chorus. She has crazy hair and a few tattoos. That is all. Also, I think she's British.

Ok, enough about that... for now... bwahaha

I hope the manager meeting gets out at a reasonable time, I would like to go get my invisible eyebrows waxed. Also, I took a day off yesterday at the insistence of one of the owners. This makes me slightly uneasy, because she worked for me yesterday. I expect a list of things to do when I get in this morning. Also, a list of things not to do. Fun!

Also, just thought I'd mention... it's frickin hot as hades in Dallas! Been hitting over 100 for about a week now. Boooooo!

Have a great day, kids!

So much depends on the weather

We're lucky we made it in! DFW and Loooooove are cloooooosed! (very bumpy and nice light show going over) Apparently, Houston was closed for a while, but reopened. We landed and as soon as we parked, the rain came DOWN. San Antonio is out of control... the hotels are already at capacity due to the Alamo Bowl tomorrow (Iowa and UT, baby!) and they had an Air France Big Bad Mamma Jamma divert here... that's about 300 hundred people... on top of several other 200+ capacity jets we saw parked randomly on the tarmac. They're sending the passengers to high schools and emergency shelters! Can you imagine coming back from France, thinking you're going to Dallas to go to home, or connect home... then diverting to San Antonio and sleeping in a high school gym? Hopefully they hit duty free and can drink themselves into a good night. Or a bonne nuit, as those French froggy bastards might say.

Glad we don't have to be there bright and earlier to watch that catastrophe unfold.

I haven't peed since Grand Rapids

Bad day... bad day. There are very strict regulations flying into Washington Dc (and out) and apparently it's been too long since the vast majority has been petrified into submitting to FAA and they think they are under the impression that because they are white and own a suit that they are above Federal Law and can do what they please.

Not on my boat.

I do not care who you are. What color/religion/whattheshitever you are. If you stand up and approach the flight deck after you have been told 8 times not to... haha... you will be reminded that interfering with crew member's instructions is a federal violation.

It's the nation's capital. Do NOT test me. I am hostile. And PMSing. And go ahead and dismount before complaining to a gate agent at DCA that you were not allowed to potty because they will recite the same FAA guideline I memorized. FEDERAL LAWS are FEDERAL LAWS. Piss when the seatbelt sign is off, or meet Washington DC's finest. I'm sorry that you make poor decisions. But it's law, and you knew that would be the case before we shut the door.

One of those days

3:30 Put HUGE glob of lotion in hair thinking it was conditioner.

4:00 Hair dryer in hotel blew a fuse.

4:15 Snagged panty hose- huge run. Didn't pack an extra pair.

5:05 Van driver stepped on my foot and put run ..2 in panty hose.

5:55 Random pat down by smelly, touchy-feely old security guy.

6:20 Ramper drops 10lb bag of ice dangerously close to my feet- it breaks. we're at a hardstand- so it takes forever for them to go back to Ops and get a broom/dustpan and replacement bag. Even though I've told them 10 times I don't need ice. Even had the captain help me translate.

7:15 Drunk passenger upset because I explained to him twice that he could give me $20 for a beer, but I would not be giving him change. He wanted the beer anyway. Then proceeded to harass me the entire flight- tried to trip me or stood up and pretended to be looking for something in overhead everytime I walked down the aisle, elbowed me HARD in the back/ass everytime I stood behind his seat to talk to the pax behind him. Pushed me into galley cart- run ..3. Harassed everyone else on the flight-even woke sleeping pax- to find change.

8:30 Hair mostly dry.

8:55 Captain forgets Gen Decs on aircraft. Wait FOREVER for him to run back and get them.

9:05 Drunk pax sees the FO and I standing by the employee line (still waiting on the gendecs) and comes over to harass me some more.

9:06 Security steps in.

9:40 Car in employee lot splashes muddy water all over me: Hair, face, uniform.

10:15 Held up line at toll booth because one of my quarters, upon further inspection, was CANADIAN! Argh. Cars honk and yell while I frantically search for change in my cup holders and wallet.

10:20 Able to laugh about it.

The joys of becoming a line holder

Tomorrow morning I am deadheading (getting paid to fly as a passenger) to Leon/Guanajuato, Mexico. We arrive at noon and stay for 18 hours- It's like crew scheduling is saying, "Hey, sorry about those five months you were on reserve. And all those times we made you sit ARC. Or made you fly to CLE and EWR to sit hotel reserve. Oh, and all those Monterrey turns. Haha. Oh, oh, oh and those 3:30am wake up calls to 'advise you' of a 5:30 show time for a Monterrey turn with a EWR flowthru to sit arc for 8 hours! It's a 14.45 hour duty day, so it's legal. Those really are our favorites. Anyhoo, sorry about all that. Here, have a nice relaxing deadhead and 18 hours to play in Mexico. Oh, and it's only a two day trip, so there's plenty of room in your suitcase to stock up on cheap booze, cigarettes, jewelry, etc (xmas shopping)."

Which is really nice of them because GODDAMN did they treat me like a ping pong ball in a wind tunnel! It actually got worse the closer I was to getting off of reserve. Now, I am freee! And they're sending me on a mini-vaca to Mexico to make up for it.
